Our Story

  • 1859-June 24

First Baptist Church was constituted with Rev. Charles S. Gaulden, Pastor and less than 15 charter members. First sermon preached at a meeting in a store building downtown.
FBC worshiped in a white wooden frame house on Screven Street.

1860-1906

  • 1906

A new house of worship was erected by the now incorporated “First Baptist Church of Quitman,” for the sum of $22,500, a brick building with numerous memorial stained glass windows and walnut seats for a membership varying from 300 to 500.
Large annex  addition to church for Sunday School use.

1938

  • 1950

Acquisition of “Old Library Building” on Screven St. for more Sunday School space.
Mission constituted as Northside Baptist Church.

1956

  • 1960

Sanctuary Dedication Day Service.

  • 1969

Contract signed to construct Georgian style Sanctuary, with a capacity of 1,000

1962

Mrs. Mabel Emerson  and her Sunday School class started the first annual Easter Cross on the front lawn.
Ground breaking for two new wings and Educational Building renovation.

1975

The Kindergarten Ministry begins.  Second Century Church Building and Congregation dedicated.  Resident membership 663.  The Sr. Adult Ministry begins.
Sunday School Session Children's Church begins for 4 &  5 year olds.

1977

Historical Receptacle in old pulpit for permanent display in church hall.

  • 1985

First Fall Craft Fair with all the money being donated to the GA Baptist Children's Homes.

1982

Note burning FBCQ debt free!  Value of all properties $1,464,000.  
Organ dedication and recital in the sanctuary.
FBCQ Members were supported in going as part of the Associational Mission Team to Liberia.

1988

First Baptist Church Kindergarten class was extended to 2:30 pm.  
"Friends Day" on March 31st with 526 in attendance.
The Grimes house was purchased and used as a Clothes Closet for the community.

1998

  • 1999

A sanctuary renovation project begins.  During this time we have 2 morning service.  On Easter Sunday a dedication service was held in the newly remodeled sanctuary.  Our church celebrated our 140th anniversary.  The Care Team ministry began in an effort to reach absentees.
First Baptist Church Quitman Fellowship Hall was made available as a Red Cross Shelter.

2000

  • 2002

Our Mission Team went to serve in Quincy, Massachusetts.  
Operation Christmas Child boxes were collected and dedicated.
Our elevator installtion was completed making it easier to better utilize the upstairs educational space.

2003

New bus is delivered and a bus shelter is built.
Our Mission Team went to serve in Slidell, Louisiana at Byou Baptist Church as a part of the Adopt-A-Church Program.   Easter Shoebox Collection for Tsunami victims.  Over 200 Boxes were delivered for Samaritans Purse Distribution.

2005

2006

WOM mission project Coats for North Korean Children.

2009

FBCQ hosts the Community Christmas Cantata with 465 in attendance.

2011

Mrs. Kay Roberts, church secretary, retires having served the church for 57 years.
The church pastorium is sold.  The church bought the Pincus House as well as the Hagan house.

2007

First Baptist Church Quitman entered a partnership with Peru.

2010

FBCQ purchases two Steinway Pianos - one for the Sanctuary and one for the chapel.

2013

2014

Church begins printing "The Visitor" newsletter in-house.
FBCQuitman.org domain registered for church website..

2015

2016

Beginning in March 2020, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp issued a series of Executive Orders addressing the State’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.   Included in these Orders was a prohibition on large groups of people gathering in a single location.   Though the church must suspend in-person services, First Baptist Quitman
continues to minister using YouTube for streaming Live Services
and Daily Devotions in the wake of the Pandemic.
Church expands outreach ministry to social media with Facebook page.
